The last thing anyone should do is study clouds while driving. That's why my wife insists I be the passenger whenever we go for a drive. She often expresses her concerns about my ability to focus on the road when I become distracted by the ever-changing sky. She admits I make her nervous when I'm behind the wheel, and I can’t deny that her apprehension is well-founded. Some men might pretend to make their wives nervous just to avoid driving, but that's not my style—wink, wink. I genuinely appreciate the beauty of the world around me, and clouds, in particular, have always held a special place in my heart.

The truth is, I've always been captivated by clouds. As a young boy, I would lie in the grass with my friends George and Joey, gazing at the clouds to find shapes resembling characters. We would spend hours in the warm sun, letting our imaginations run wild as we pointed out various formations. Often, they looked like fish swimming through the sky, docks where boats might rest, or cartoon figures leaping playfully across the azure backdrop. Those moments were filled with laughter and creativity, as we crafted stories around the shapes we saw. Even though I can't recall the last time I lay in the grass gazing at the clouds above, the stunning beauty of these drifting marvels still captivates me today.

I love observing them in all their forms, whether they are fluffy cumulus clouds on a bright summer day or the dramatic, swirling patterns of a stormy sky. Painting them on my canvas is always a delight, allowing me to translate my admiration into art. As a painter, I believe that to capture them well, one must study them closely, observe their movement, and remember the mid-tones that bring depth and dimension to the artwork. Painting clouds, like anything else in the realm of art, requires time and patience. It is not just about the colors but also about the emotions they evoke and the stories they tell.

When it comes to lying in the grass and admiring the wonders of nature, I have five grandchildren who might enjoy spending some time with their granddad, using their imagination to spot figures in the sky. I envision us lying together on a soft blanket, surrounded by the sounds of nature, as we take turns pointing out the different shapes we see. I can already picture their excited voices exclaiming, "Look, that one looks like a dragon!" or "That one reminds me of a spaceship!" It would be a wonderful opportunity to bond with them, to share the joy of creativity and the simple pleasures of life. Through these shared experiences, I hope to instill in them a love for the natural world and the beauty that surrounds us, just as I discovered in my own childhood.

Cheers To The Clouds Above

By Eric Buechel

Murmurs of cotton in the radiant sky,

Drifting softly, they wander high.

A ballet of shadows, a dance of light,

Painting the heavens, a wondrous sight.

Fluffy Dreams

Like dreams unspoken, they float and sway,

In the warm embrace of the golden day.

Each puff a story, a tale untold,

In shades of white, and hints of gold.

Stormy Whispers

But when they gather, dark and deep,

They hold the secrets that nature keeps.

Thunder rumbles, and lightning strikes,

In their tempestuous hearts, the wildness likes.

Soft Goodbyes

As twilight falls, they blush and fade,

In hues of pink, their serenade.

With every sunset, they bid adieu,

Yet promise to return, fresh and new.

Cheers to the clouds, both near and far,

In their gentle presence, we find our star.

For in their beauty, we learn to dream,

Cheers to the clouds, our skyward theme!
