Tennessee Landscapes

Updated: Mar 22

In 2003, I relocated to Tennessee from New Jersey and never regretted it. My passion for landscape painting certainly influenced my affection for Tennessee, but it was the generosity and kindness of the people here that secured my decision to stay. My adopted state is both vast and beautiful, and I will never need to go elsewhere to find subjects to paint. This piece was inspired by a hike in The South Cumberland State Park. It was a remarkable day, walking atop the mountain and witnessing nature's cathedral. Along the path, I can still recall the tranquility of the day. In these times of social media, television, radio, and noise, being outdoors, away from all the distractions of modern society, is a blessing. The saying "Speech is silver, silence is golden" is a proverb that praises the value of silence over speech. Its modern form likely originated in Arabic culture, where it was used as early as the 9th century.

With all that said, I simply wanted to recreate that day of solitude and reflection, a day that lingered in my memory like a cherished photograph, capturing the essence of peace and tranquility. And what better place to do all of that than atop a mountain in the heart of Tennessee, where the natural beauty and serene environment provide the perfect backdrop for contemplation and introspection? As I embarked on this journey, I could vividly recall the steps I took to ascend the mountain on a very warm day in the middle of summer; each step was imbued with a sense of purpose, as if I were not just climbing a physical height but also elevating my spirit and thoughts.

The path was lined with vibrant wildflowers swaying gently in the warm breeze, their colors a vivid reminder of the beauty that nature offers. I remember the sound of leaves rustling overhead, a soft symphony accompanying my ascent, while the sun cast a warm golden glow on everything it touched. The air was thick with the scent of pine and earth, grounding me in the moment as I navigated the winding trail. Each bend in the path revealed new vistas, breathtaking views that opened up like a gift, showcasing the rolling hills and valleys of Tennessee, a patchwork quilt of greens and browns stretching as far as the eye could see.

But mostly, I remember those beautiful moments spent admiring God's gift to us all—the breathtaking landscape that unfolded before me, a testament to the artistry of creation. Standing at the summit, I felt a profound connection to the world around me, an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the beauty of life. The clouds floated lazily in the sky, casting shadows that danced on the ground below, while the distant sounds of nature created a harmonious backdrop to my thoughts. In that moment of solitude, I was enveloped in a sense of clarity, where worries and distractions faded away, leaving only a serene awareness of the present.

As I took a deep breath, inhaling the crisp mountain air, I felt rejuvenated, as if the very essence of the mountain was infusing me with strength and inspiration. I closed my eyes, allowing the symphony of nature to wash over me, and I reflected on the journey that had brought me to this sacred space. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the importance of stepping away from the chaos of daily life to reconnect with the beauty of the world and the stillness within oneself. In that sacred space atop the mountain, I found not just a physical elevation, but a profound elevation of spirit, a true celebration of life and all its wonders.

I've created paintings of Tennessee's stunning scenery, inspired by its breathtaking beauty and diverse landscapes. The rolling hills, vibrant foliage, and serene waterways provide a captivating backdrop. Each painting reflects the region's changing light and atmosphere, allowing me to express my emotions and connect with nature.

My father, Enest Buechel Sr., a skilled landscape artist and model ship builder, greatly influenced my artistic journey. Growing up surrounded by his works, I developed a deep appreciation for nature's subtleties. His passion for art inspired my own work, where I channel his teachings and insights. In my paintings, I strive to capture Tennessee's physical beauty and the emotions they evoke. Each brushstroke connects me to my heritage and pays tribute to my father's legacy, continuing the family tradition of celebrating the natural world through art. My paintings reflect both my personal experiences and the rich tapestry of the environment.
