The Girl with the Ribbon

by Eric Buechel

Once in a quaint village, nestled between rolling hills, lived a girl named Lila. She was known for the bright ribbon she wore in her hair, its vivid colors shimmering in the sunlight. It was a gift from her grandmother, who had told her that the ribbon would carry her dreams to the sky. Every day after school, Lila would rush to the nearby meadow, where wildflowers danced in the breeze. With her hair flowing and the ribbon trailing behind her, she would spin and twirl, imagining herself as a princess in a far-off land. The ribbon became her companion, fluttering like a flag of her joyful spirit.

One afternoon, while exploring the edge of the meadow, Lila stumbled upon an old, forgotten well. Curious, she leaned over and peered inside. To her surprise, she saw a shimmering light below. Without hesitation, Lila tied her ribbon to a sturdy stick and lowered it down into the well, hoping to touch the light. As the ribbon dipped into the depths, a gentle wind swirled around her, and the light rose, illuminating the well's walls with a soft glow. Suddenly, the ribbon pulled back, and Lila felt a strange tug in her heart. With a swift motion, she pulled it back up and gasped in wonder.

At the end of the ribbon was a small, ethereal creature, no taller than her hand, with wings that sparkled like stars. "Thank you for freeing me," it chimed, its voice like the tinkling of bells. "I am a dream sprite, trapped in this well for many years. Your ribbon has given me a chance to soar again!" Lila's eyes widened with excitement. "What will you do now?" she asked. "I will grant you a wish," the sprite replied, fluttering around her. "But remember, true magic lies in the heart." Lila thought carefully. She wished not for riches or fame but for the happiness of her village, so that laughter and joy could fill every home.

The sprite smiled and waved its tiny hands, releasing a shower of sparkling dust that spread across the meadow. From that day on, the village thrived with laughter, and Lila became known as the girl who wore the ribbon in her hair. It was a symbol not just of her dreams, but of the joy she had shared with others. And every time she danced in the meadow, the ribbon fluttered behind her, a reminder that magic exists in the simplest acts of kindness.

The Ribbon in Her Hair

by Eric Buechel

In the morning light, so soft and fair,

A girl dances lightly, with a ribbon in her hair.

Threads of blue, like the sky above,

Whispering secrets of dreams and love.

She twirls and spins in a meadow wide,

With laughter that echoes, a joyous tide.

The flowers bend low, as if to admire,

The girl with the ribbon, her heart full of fire.

Through valleys and hills, she wanders free,

With the wind as her friend, and the sun as her glee.

The ribbon it flutters, a banner of grace,

A symbol of hope, in this magical place.

At dusk, when the stars begin to appear,

She ties up her dreams with that ribbon so dear.

For in every twist, and in every bow,

Lies the spirit of childhood, forever aglow.
