Ode to Christine de Pizan
by Eric Buechel
In shadowed halls of thought, she did arise,
A beacon bright, where few have dared to tread;
With ink as sword and parchment as her prize,
She carved her place where oft’ was silence spread.
Born of fair Venice, daughter of the night,
In Paris’ heart her voice began to soar,
A widow’s strength, a fierce and blazing light,
She penned the truth beneath the watchful lore.
O City of Ladies, vision so divine,
Where women’s tales take flight on wings of grace,
With every brick, she laid a steady line,
To build a world where all might find their place.
In pages rich with wisdom, she unfurled
The stories of the noble, brave, and wise;
From queens to scholars, they transformed the world,
Their legacies, like stars, shall never die.
With pen in hand, she battled prejudice,
Against the tides of scorn and bitter blame;
A warrior for those lost in dark abyss,
She championed women, never sought for fame.
Her words, a fortress strong against the storm,
In every line, a challenge to the norm,
She wove a tapestry of voices rare,
A chorus rising, filled with strength and care.
In courts of kings, her wisdom found its home,
Advising rulers, shaping destiny;
With every lesson, she would deftly comb
Through history’s fabric, seeking clarity.
The Book of the City of Ladies stands,
A sanctuary for those who seek to learn;
In every chapter, hope and truth expands,
A torch of knowledge, evermore to burn.
O Christine, thy spirit still inspires,
In every heart that yearns for voice and pen;
Thou lit the flame of countless women’s fires,
A legacy that echoes now and then.
So let us raise our quills in tribute true,
To the lady who defied the world’s disdain;
In every word, we honor what thou knew,
That strength and wisdom thrive beyond the pain.
As centuries unfold, thy tale remains,
A testament to courage, fierce and bright;
In every struggle, every joy, and strain,
We find thy spirit, guiding us to fight.
Christine de Pizan, thy name we hold dear,
A pioneer of thought, a voice so clear;
In history’s tapestry, thou dost shine,
A radiant star, forever intertwined.
