A Home On Genesis Lake

I created "Summer On The Lake" a few months after relocating to the Crossville, Tennessee area in 2003. This move marked a significant turning point for my family and me, as we transitioned from the bustling environment of New Jersey, where I was born and raised, to the serene landscapes of Tennessee. Although the decision to leave behind familiar surroundings was not taken lightly, it is a choice I have never regretted. The charm of the Crossville area, with its rolling hills and picturesque lakes, offered a refreshing change of pace and a new beginning for us.

During our transition, we rented a lovely home on the lake while our property in Pleasant Hill was under development. This lake house was more than just a temporary residence; it became a sanctuary for our family, allowing the kids to adjust to their new surroundings in a nurturing and engaging environment. The proximity to the water provided them with opportunities to learn about fishing, explore the natural beauty around us, and enjoy countless hours of play in a safe and inviting setting. The memories we created during those early days in the lake house are etched in my mind, each moment filled with laughter and discovery.

Although this painting was completed long ago, and many details of that day have faded from memory, I distinctly recall the excitement and anticipation as I set up my easel on the soft grass by the lake's edge. In my enthusiasm, I accidentally dropped my palette, which was brimming with vibrant colors, onto the ground. The splatter of paint was both disheartening and comical, prompting me to replace all the paint and meticulously clean the palette before I could truly begin my work. It was a small setback, but it only fueled my determination to create something beautiful.

At that time, I was deeply inspired by the works of Camille Pissarro, a renowned Impressionist painter known for his ability to capture the essence of outdoor scenes. I had been reading about how he would set up his easel outdoors, often transporting his supplies in a small cart while searching for the perfect spot to begin his artistic endeavors. This notion resonated with me, and I felt a similar urge to find a location that encapsulated the beauty of my new environment. I chose a serene spot in the backyard near the lake, surrounded by the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft lapping of water against the shore.

With my easel firmly positioned, I began the painting process with quick brushstrokes and a generous application of paint. The excitement of creating in such an inspiring setting propelled me forward. I can't recall exactly how long it took to finish this piece, but I vividly remember the initial phase of swiftly sketching the sepia outline on the canvas, a process that took no more than 20 minutes. Once the outline was established, I eagerly began to add color, allowing the scene to come to life with each stroke.

I paid careful attention to the neighbor's charming red house on the left side of the canvas, ensuring that it added character to the scene without overwhelming it. However, my primary focus remained on the gazebo, an inviting structure that beckoned for attention, and just enough of the lake to provide context without overshadowing the special place where we spent our late afternoons. I was mindful not to emphasize the lake too much, as I wanted the painting to reflect the warmth and intimacy of our experiences rather than merely showcase the landscape.

By the end of that day, as the sun began to set and cast a golden hue over everything, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had captured something special, a moment in time that resonated with the joy and tranquility of our new life by the lake. Within a day or two, I returned to my makeshift studio in the garage, where I took the opportunity to refine a few details that I felt needed adjustment. The process of revisiting the painting allowed me to enhance its depth and richness, ensuring that it truly represented the beauty I had witnessed.

Once I was satisfied with the final touches, I stepped back to admire my work. I had created a beautiful landscape that was now ready to dry and be declared complete. This painting not only represents a moment of artistic expression but also serves as a cherished reminder of the transformative journey my family and I undertook as we embraced our new life in Tennessee.

A Home On Genesis Lake

The sun ascends, a golden sphere, Its warm embrace, the time of year.

Rippling waters, crystal clear, Whispers of joy, the season near.

Painted skies in hues of blue, With clouds like cotton, soft and few. The

breeze a gentle, playful muse, As nature sings her vibrant tune.

Children laugh, their spirits soar, With splashes echoing from the shore.

Kayaks glide, and boats set free, In every heart, a sense of glee.

As twilight falls, the sun dips low, Reflections dance, a golden glow.

Fireflies twinkle, stars ignite, The lake a mirror, pure delight.

With friends beside, we share our dreams, In laughter's warmth, the summer

beams. Each moment cherished, a treasure found, In summer's magic, our hearts

abound. So let us linger, let us stay, In summer's bliss, where spirits play. For on the

lake, life's joys awake, Forever cherished, this summer break.
