"Ol’ Smokey", A Rolling Piece of History

Ol' Smokey is not just a truck; she is a veritable treasure trove of nostalgia, a rolling piece of history that has been a steadfast presence in Cumberland County, Tennessee, since the year 1950. This remarkable vehicle has witnessed the passage of time, embodying the spirit and stories of the generations that have come into contact with her. Originally purchased by a local farmer, Ol' Smokey served dutifully for two decades before Mr. Shields, a man with a penchant for classic automobiles, acquired her from her first owner in 1970. This marked the beginning of a deep bond between Mr. Shields and the truck, one that would last for decades.

Mr. Shields’ son, Dennis, has vivid memories of Ol' Smokey from his childhood, recalling how the truck was more than just a vehicle; it was a companion on countless adventures. The truck was a constant in the backdrop of family outings, weekend trips, and even mundane errands, creating a tapestry of memories that intertwined with Dennis's formative years. In a sense, he and Ol' Smokey "grew up" together, sharing experiences that shaped their identities—he, a young boy discovering the world, and she, a reliable truck, steadfast and strong. The two became inseparable, and the truck was a symbol of freedom and exploration during those formative years.

As time marched on, Ol' Smokey eventually found her way into a barn, where she remained for several years, tucked away and awaiting a revival. The barn became a sanctuary for the truck, shielding her from the elements but also from the adventures she was once accustomed to. It was a bittersweet existence, as the years passed and the memories of her glory days began to fade. However, the spirit of Ol' Smokey remained intact, waiting for the day she would once again hit the open road.

That day finally arrived when Mr. Shields celebrated his 70th birthday. In a heartfelt gesture, his family decided it was time to bring Ol' Smokey back into the light. With great care and enthusiasm, they pulled her from her resting place in the barn, dusting off the years and preparing her for a revival. The restoration process was a labor of love; while the drive train was updated to enhance her drivability and make her easier to handle for Mr. Shields, the team worked diligently to ensure that the truck retained nearly all of its original charm and character. Every detail was meticulously attended to, from the paint job that gleamed in the sunlight to the interior that echoed the classic design of a bygone era.

Today, Ol' Smokey is no longer a forgotten relic but a celebrated icon within the community. She can be seen almost any time there’s a car show on Main Street in Crossville, Tennessee, where her presence draws admiration and nostalgia from onlookers of all ages. The truck has become a beloved fixture at these events, often surrounded by crowds eager to hear her story and reminisce about the past. Ol' Smokey stands as a testament to the enduring nature of memories, the connections forged through time, and the joy that comes from reviving cherished pieces of history. Each appearance is not just a showcase of a vintage truck but a celebration of family, heritage, and the simple pleasures that life brings. EB
