A PAINTING of A PAINTING - 2016
This is my newest artwork, a piece that invites viewers to engage in layers of observation and interpretation. In this artwork, I chose to depict a diverse group of individuals, each with their own unique backgrounds and perspectives, standing before a captivating painting in a museum setting. Their expressions range from curiosity to contemplation, reflecting the various ways in which people connect with art and the stories it tells.
The painting they are observing is a representation of an airport exhibition that took place in Crossville, Tennessee, a locale known for its vibrant community and cultural events. This particular exhibition showcased the intersection of travel, art, and local culture, and my intention was to capture that moment of reflection and appreciation. The airport itself serves as a symbol of transition and movement, while the artwork within the exhibition represents a pause—a moment where time stands still, allowing for introspection and dialogue.
As the viewers in my painting engage with the artwork before them, they embody the act of looking and interpreting, which is a fundamental aspect of the artistic experience. Each figure is rendered with careful attention to detail, from the way they hold their bodies to the expressions on their faces, which convey a range of emotions. This adds depth to the scene, inviting the audience to consider not just the artwork itself, but also the personal narratives and experiences that each observer brings to the viewing experience.
In creating this piece, I aimed to highlight the relationship between the observer and the observed, emphasizing how art can serve as a mirror reflecting our own thoughts and feelings. The choice of setting—a museum—adds an additional layer of significance, as museums are places where art is preserved and celebrated, yet they also serve as spaces for community engagement and education. Through this painting, I hope to spark conversations about the role of art in our lives and the connections we form with the works that resonate with us, whether they are created by local artists or recognized on a broader scale.
Ultimately, this artwork not only captures a moment in time but also serves as a commentary on the broader themes of observation, interpretation, and the shared human experience in the realm of art. I invite viewers to step into this scene, to reflect on their own experiences with art, and to consider how each painting, like the one depicted, can evoke a multitude of responses and inspire dialogue among diverse audiences.

A Taste of Flight
By Eric Buechel
For once you have tasted flight, You will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
Where dreams take wing in the soft twilight, And the heart sings free, unchained,
unguarded.
In whispers of wind, your spirit will soar, Past mountains and valleys, where eagles dare
glide, Each moment a memory, each heartbeat a score, With the vastness of heavens as
your faithful guide.
Though feet may tread softly on solid ground, Your soul will remember the heights you have
known, In the dance of the stars, your hopes will be found, For the sky is a canvas where dreams
have been sown.
So lift your gaze high, let your heart take to flight, For once you have tasted the freedom above,
The earth holds no bounds, and the day turns to night, With the sky as your home, and the world
wrapped in love.
