Walking Toward The Light
This artwork is among my largest mixed media pieces, showcasing a dynamic interplay of materials and techniques that enhance the visual narrative. The subject of this piece is a Catholic church, meticulously styled after a stunning old Romanesque, Neo-Gothic church that stands prominently in downtown Macon, Georgia. This particular church is not only a significant architectural landmark but also a cherished symbol of the community's rich cultural and historical heritage.
The church’s design features exquisite details, such as intricate stone carvings, soaring arches, and stained glass windows that capture the light in a mesmerizing display of colors. The Romanesque elements are evident in the rounded arches and robust structure, while the Neo-Gothic influences can be seen in the pointed spires and elaborate ornamentation that reach towards the sky, creating a sense of verticality and grandeur. This combination of styles is a hallmark of the period, reflecting the artistic and architectural trends that were prevalent during the time of its construction.
In my artwork, I have sought to capture not only the physical attributes of this remarkable church but also the spiritual essence that it embodies. The play of light and shadow across its façade, the vibrant hues of the stained glass, and the serene atmosphere surrounding the church all contribute to the overall impact of the piece. I have incorporated various mixed media elements, such as textured layers, metallic paints, and collage techniques, to evoke the tactile quality of the materials used in the church’s original construction, further immersing the viewer in the experience.
This artwork serves as a tribute to the architectural beauty and spiritual significance of the church, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences with places of worship and the role these sacred spaces play in our lives. By portraying this iconic structure, I aim to highlight not only its physical presence but also its role as a gathering place for the community, a sanctuary for reflection, and a testament to the enduring legacy of faith in the southern region.
