Walking on Water

"Walking on Water" Non-Static Impressionism By Eric Buechel, 2017, Mixed Media on Paper, Sheet Size 22" x 30"

In this Non-static Impressionism painting, I endeavored to capture a fleeting moment from a memorable hiking trip with my son George at a picturesque Tennessee State Park, nestled in our local area. The park, with its lush greenery, vibrant wildflowers, and the gentle sounds of nature, provided the perfect backdrop for this artistic expression. The essence of this painting lies in its ability to convey the emotion and spontaneity of that day, allowing viewers to connect with the experience on a deeper level.

To achieve the distinctive blurred effect that characterizes this work, I intentionally refrained from placing any lines or definitive guides on the paper before applying the medium. This approach stands in stark contrast to most traditional art styles, which typically involve creating a structured foundation to guide the placement of paint or ink. In many artistic practices, artists meticulously sketch outlines to ensure accuracy and precision; however, in this impressionistic style, I chose to eliminate all lines, embracing the freedom and fluidity that comes with it.

Reflecting on our childhood experiences, many of us remember the simple joy of coloring within the lines of a coloring book page, adhering to the boundaries set before us. This painting, however, is a celebration of the opposite philosophy—one that encourages breaking free from constraints and exploring the beauty of spontaneity. The absence of lines invites the viewer to interpret the scene in a personal way, allowing for a more profound emotional connection.

The application of color and form to the paper is done in a committed manner, as there is no turning back once the medium is laid down. This decisive approach adds a layer of intensity to the work, as making corrections becomes, at best, a challenging endeavor. Each stroke is imbued with intention and emotion, reflecting the raw and unfiltered experience of that moment shared with my son. The blurred final product is not merely an artistic choice; it serves a greater purpose of evoking a memory, capturing a moment in time that transcends the visual to touch the heart.

In this piece, the joyful bliss of childhood is poignantly depicted through the simple yet expressive gesture of arms outstretched, embodying the exuberance and innocence of youth. The viewer can almost hear the laughter that likely filled the air at that very moment, a sound that resonates with the pure delight of exploration and discovery. The painting invites you to step into that memory, to feel the warmth of the sun, the rustle of leaves, and the uncontainable joy of a child immersed in nature. Through this impressionistic lens, I aim to celebrate not just the beauty of the landscape, but also the profound bond between a parent and child, encapsulated in a single, vibrant moment of shared happiness.
