The application for the Guggenheim Fellowship was an extensive and rigorous process that took almost an entire year to complete. This journey unfolded in a two-step application process that required not only the development of a compelling artistic project concept but also, upon acceptance of that concept, the submission of a carefully curated selection of artistic images that represented my work. The time and effort invested in this endeavor were immense, as I dedicated countless hours to meticulously selecting the perfect pieces for submission. Each piece had to resonate with the core theme of my project while also showcasing my artistic versatility.
One of the most challenging aspects of this application process was the minimal guidance provided for applicants. This lack of direction often left me in a state of uncertainty, second-guessing my choices and questioning whether the pieces I had selected would resonate with the judges. It became clear that this was not merely an exercise in choosing my favorite works; it was a complex task that required me to create a project that would not only capture the interest of the Guggenheim committee but also demonstrate my artistic capabilities in a profound and meaningful way. My overarching aim was to illustrate my skills as an artist who is capable of producing works across various genres and styles.
The pieces I ultimately chose to submit reflected a wide range of contrasting artistic styles, including tight realism, which captures the intricate details of the subject matter, and non-static impressionism, characterized by blurred, dreamlike images that evoke a sense of movement and emotion. Additionally, I incorporated mixed media paintings that combined various materials and techniques, as well as ink drawings that showcased my ability to work with line and form. This diverse selection was intentional, as I sought to present a holistic view of my artistic identity and capabilities.
In my preparation, I took the time to observe the works of past winners of the Guggenheim Fellowship. I was acutely aware that by not adhering to the "Tate Museum Model," which often emphasizes certain contemporary trends and styles, I was taking a significant risk. However, I chose to follow my heart and remain true to my individual artistic style. My intention was to showcase artistic beauty—a concept that has been celebrated and revered throughout the centuries. I have always believed that beauty is an essential element of the human experience. It is something that is universally recognized and cherished, manifesting in the simplicity of every sunrise and sunset we witness.
Reflecting on this journey, I acknowledge that I may never apply for this prestigious award again. However, I take immense pride in having completed this challenging process. I aimed high, pushing the boundaries of my creativity and artistic expression, and I genuinely enjoyed every step of the way. I am deeply grateful to all those who supported me throughout this endeavor. My heartfelt thanks go to my parents, my teachers, and especially to the late Dr. Furman Finck, who served as Dean of the DuCret School of Art and provided invaluable guidance and inspiration. I am also thankful to the references who believed in my artistic ability and provided their support—Stephen, Carl, Leslie, and Terri. Last but not least, I extend my deepest gratitude to my wife, Kathy Buechel, whose unwavering support and inspiration have fueled my artistic journey in countless ways.
Below, I am proud to present the 18 works I submitted to the panel of judges, each piece representing a facet of my artistic journey. Additionally, I have included a link to the profiles of all the fine art winners of this prestigious fellowship. Congratulations to them all for their remarkable achievements and contributions to the world of art.
On April 4, 2018, the Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation sanctioned the granting of 173 Guggenheim Fellowships (including two joint Fellowships) to a varied group of scholars, artists, and scientists. Selected based on previous accomplishments and outstanding potential, the successful candidates were chosen from nearly 3,000 applicants in the Foundation's ninety-fourth competition. - Link
The Guggenheim Museum
By Eric Buechel
In spiraled grace, a vision stands,
Where art and architecture blend like hands.
White walls embrace the light so pure,
A sanctuary where dreams endure.
With every turn, a story unfolds,
Of masters’ strokes and visions bold.
From Kandinsky’s hues to Picasso’s lines,
In this haven, creativity shines.
Visitors wander, hearts in flight,
Captivated by each work's delight.
A spiral journey, upward we go,
Through time and space, the art does flow.
In New York’s heart, a treasure we find,
A testament to the human mind.
The Guggenheim, a beacon bright,
Where art ignites the soul's delight.
