Rachel's Tomb

When Rachel Jackson passed away unexpectedly on December 22, 1828, the loss was profound and deeply felt, both personally by her husband, Andrew Jackson, and by those who knew her. At the time of her passing, Andrew Jackson had not yet arranged a suitable final resting place for his beloved wife, which undoubtedly added to his grief during such an already sorrowful time. In a heartfelt decision, he chose to bury Rachel in her cherished garden at The Hermitage, a location that held special significance for her and where she had spent many joyful moments tending to her plants and flowers. The garden was not just a collection of flora; it was a vibrant reflection of Rachel’s spirit and her love for nature. Andrew Jackson, in his desire to honor Rachel's memory, commissioned the construction of a small frame house over her limestone burial crypt. This structure was intended to serve as a temporary resting place until a more fitting and enduring monument could be erected to commemorate her life and legacy. The choice of a burial site in the garden symbolized not only Rachel's love for the natural beauty surrounding her but also Andrew's wish to keep her close to the life they had built together at The Hermitage. This poignant moment in history inspired a painting that captures the essence of the estate and the profound connection between Rachel and her garden. After visiting the former president's estate, I found myself deeply moved by the beauty of Mrs. Jackson's garden, which seemed to tell a story of its own. As a gardener myself, I was particularly drawn to the vibrant colors and the careful arrangement of flowers, which felt as if Rachel were still present, lovingly picking a bouquet to brighten the dining room table. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze created an atmosphere that was both serene and nostalgic. In that garden, it was easy to imagine Rachel’s hands skillfully tending to her beloved plants, her laughter echoing through the pathways as she nurtured not just the flowers but also the life and joy that surrounded her. The garden stood as a testament to her life, a living memorial that continues to evoke memories of her warmth and kindness, making it a place where visitors can feel a connection to the past and the enduring love that Andrew Jackson held for his wife. Rachel's Garden

By Eric Buechel

In the heart of Tennessee, where the wildflowers bloom, Rachel tended her garden,

dispelling all gloom. With hands soft as petals, she nurtured each seed, In the warmth of the

sunlight, her spirit was freed.

Amidst the green leaves, her laughter would dance, With every sweet blossom, she found

her romance. The roses, like secrets, in fragrant array, Spoke tales of her love in the soft light

of day.

Spring brought her joy with each colorful sprout, While summer's warm breezes sang sweetly

about. Autumn's rich colors, like a painter's fine brush, Wrapped her dear garden in a warm,

golden hush.

In quiet reflection, she'd wander the rows, Where the lilies stood tall and the soft river flows.

Each petal, each leaf, held a piece of her heart, In this sacred haven, she found her true art.

Though time may have passed and the seasons have turned, Rachel's love for her garden

forever will burn. For in every flower, her spirit remains, In the whispers of nature, her love

still sustains.
