"An Aerial View of Crossville" by Eric Buechel, Oil on Canvas, 32" x 32", 2017. I created this piece using a photograph I captured during my first date with my wife, Kathy, as we flew over Crossville, Tennessee, in a Bell UH-1 military helicopter, hanging out of the machine-gun door. It was an incredibly thrilling first date.

On Our First Date,

Above Crossville

by Eric Buechel

In a chariot of silver, we rise through the skies,

With the world spread beneath us, a breathtaking surprise.

The blades spin a rhythm, a dance in the air,

As we soar over valleys, with dreams laid bare.

The sun paints the horizon in hues of gold,

While whispers of laughter weave stories untold.

Crossville below us, a patchwork of green,

Where rivers weave tales of the places we’ve been.

With the wind in our hair and our hearts set afloat,

Each moment a treasure on this magical boat.

The lakes shimmer brightly, like jewels in the sun,

In this moment together, our journey’s begun.

We glide past the mountains, their majesty grand,

In the silence, we find what words can’t quite stand.

A glance and a smile, the connection ignites,

In the heart of the heavens, our spirits take flight.

As the helicopter circles, the world spins away,

In this fleeting embrace, we wish we could stay.

For a first date in the sky, over Crossville’s embrace,

Is a memory woven, in time and in space.

Crossville from above is genuinely beautiful — the Cumberland Plateau geology really only makes sense once you get up there and see how the river systems carved everything. Aerial photography over small cities tells stories that ground-level shots never can. Reminds me a bit of how operators with aviamisto keep that kind of utility-flying tradition alive on the rotorcraft side. Great shot here.
